Bringing Fancy Back

You just heard about Eagle’s “to black tie or not to black tie” dilemma. For us, black tie wasn’t ever something that was truly “debated”. It had been lingering in the back of our heads for a while, but, with a nighttime wedding (ceremony at 6:30pm, cocktails at 7:30pm), we knew that the overall vibe of the event would be on the formal end of the spectrum.

Many of my inspiration photos involved candles

Black tie was one of those "we'll figure it out later" things.

Turkey's Shower Tips

Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you how to wash. These are bridal shower tips.

As I mentioned, I am a two shower bride. The next shower is in my hometown in upstate NY in March, so I have some time to prepare. And there are some things I need to change adjust for the next time around.

I'm not going to share things that I knew before (and you likely do too) - like ensure you share with everyone who the gift is from when opening it, have someone keep track of who gives you what gift (in case cards get replaced), greet all your guests, thank your hostess(es) at the end publicly, etc. etc.

These tips are some that I haven't seen shared around these parts (not that they haven't been...). To make my point, I'm going to be sharing the good, the bad and even some ugly with you all. Get ready.

Two...shower bride

There are two dress brides and two shoe brides, but I was lucky enough to be a two shower bride! Due to travel schedules during the winter, Mr. Turkey's cousins were kind enough to throw me a bridal shower this fall (that is why we registered so early).

How beautiful are these invitations?

Hair today...

and hopefully gone before June!

Unlike fellow bloggers Hawk and Uni (do you mind if I call you Uni?), I am NOT in love with my hair. I've gone through a number of styles in my 29 years...and some of them have been pretty rough. Don't believe me...check it out:

I created this to be like the Transformation feature from InStyle for a team event a while back

Giving back...to your entourage

We all know brides get to be pampered throughout their engagement, but what about their friends? Yes, their guests are treated to a fabulous wedding (and often, welcome bags), but what about the other events?

As a bridesmaid, while prepping for the bride-to-be's bachelorette weekend at the beach, I decided to put together some fun goodies for the entourage.

Flip flops EVERYWHERE
The first project was to make personalized cups for each of the attendees. I used plastic martini glasses purchased from Party City and a simple Sharpie. Each glass had the girl's name + "C___'s Bachelorette 2010" around the base.

In production
In use for the champagne toast
If you look to the left of the photo, you can see one cup that doesn't match (the horror!!). Well, it seemed unfair not to give the bachelorette special treatment! We gave her this fancy glass from Lolita and, let me tell you, it got a LOT of action over the weekend!

Poof not included
Beside the cups, I decided to do gift bags since, well, who doesn't like gifts!?!? This started with paper gift bags from Party City, personalized again with their name and "C____'s Bachelorette" (this time I just used Crayola markers).

The bachelorette gets a special one!
In the gift bags, we looked to include some things that would fit for both the beach...and a bachelorette! Here's a look at some of our items (full list below).

No tan lines!
Cure hangovers
Put a ring on it
Catch up on your gossip
The full list: bachelorette mints, candy, chap stick, granola bars, magazines, pain reliever, ring mints, sunscreen and, of course, the water bottles! Added to the bachelorette bag: bachelorette sash, boa, flashing button and monogrammed tissues.

All in all, the details were both recognized and enjoyed - from the tableware to the glasses. The gift bags were a HUGE hit, especially the magazines and the pain relievers! It was well worth the effort and I definitely plan to do again, for my own bachelorette, with only minimal adjustment (like maybe Wal-Mart instead of CVS purchases, more specific to location, etc. - more on that to come).

What have you seen or done at bachelorette parties that you think is worth repeating?

How Do You Do?

[waves hello]

Hi there! I can't believe that I'm writing this post...it feels so surreal and I am just so SO honored. In the course of a couple of hours, I went from emailing Mrs. Penguin about whether my auto response (you know, for rejection) had gone to my email doppleganger* to receiving an invitation to join the Hive. WOW.

How to save the date? - Part IV

If you missed anything, here are links to Part I, Part II and Part III.

As you saw, we had 5 top choices from our engagement session for the photo on our save the date...so which one did we choose?

They're HEREEEEEE
Seriously, when I picked up this bag I was giddy with excitement

Engagement Session

Our engagement session came just shortly after our venue change, so we felt like we had a fresh start! The plan was to do photos around the historic Old City section of Philadelphia since we would be on the other side for the wedding (Mr. Turkey is also a big history buff). We had a GORGEOUS day for our engagement pictures with our fantastic photographer and our slight nerves were calmed almost instantly.

There were definitely some awkward photos at the start!

Embracing the New (Venue)!

So, we had a replacement for the Kimmel Center on the table.

With what we knew - both about the new option and the (lack of) other options for 05/XX/12 - it was nearly set that we would have our wedding at The Rittenhouse. However, we couldn't seal the deal sight unseen, so my mom came down from NY the next day to make the visit with me*. Be prepared for a very picture-heavy post!

Picture Love

This is a bit out of order, but since I'm about to tell you about our engagement session, it probably makes sense to tell you about our photographer (you know, the one taking the pictures).

Although I haven't talked at all about photography, it was something that was very important to us. I LOVE pictures and am known for always having a camera with me (seriously - every day). In fact, in college, many of my girlfriends didn't have cameras since they knew I would be prepared.

Designated photographer at a bridal shower
My love of photography led me to peruse many blogs and websites after our engagement. Too many to even remember. I didn't even keep track, to be honest. Yes, I'm a terrible blogger.

Really really ridiculously good...

handwriting.

As I mentioned, we received our Save the Date envelopes early so that I could get working on the calligraphy for the envelopes. My main artistic skill has always been my penmanship - since I was a kid (sorry - no long lost samples of my journals to insert here). And to answer one of the most asked questions - no, I did not attend a Catholic school.

I thought it would be fun to do the calligraphy for our paper products, but, somewhat more importantly, I thought our friends and family would expect it. Seriously - for those who know me well, if I had paid for calligraphy it would have been...I'd argue...disappointing. Even Mr. Turkey took it for granted.

Lucky

While reading this post, you may question my choice of title...but stick it out, OK?

It was an average fall day...one of my final summer Fridays* of the year. The sun was shining and there were just over 2 hours until I planned to spend my afternoon wandering the Philadelphia streets for a bit (I really wanted a late lunch from the Guapos Taco truck).

Where my brain was
Source
As I was imagining my delicious Mexican snack, my phone buzzed on the desk, listing "Jen from Kimmel Center" as the caller. I picked up and cheerily said "Hi Jen - Happy Friday!" Her response did not seem as peppy and when she mentioned that her colleague was with her on the call, I got a strange feeling. However, I did not expect what she said to me:

"Miss Turkey - we're sorry to tell you that we're no longer going to be able to hold your wedding at the Kimmel Center on May XX, 2012."

How to save the date? - Part III

So the paper store route did not work out and I was headed down the custom path. I started googling away for "custom invitations Philly" and found that, in the area, there seemed to be a lot of options...all with great reputations. I looked at all their samples, blogs, client commentary, etc. However, I kept going back to the website of one - Two Paperdolls.

Photos like the one above were drawing me in - so pretty! so coordinated! I couldn't resist scheduling an appointment.

How to save the date? - Part II

When I last left you, I was armed with my doodles and heading off to visit some vendors who might be able to help me with our paper products. As fun as it might have been, I did not think that I had either the talent or tools (no Cricut or Gocco for this girl) or time to conquer them on my own!

I started with a trip to the new Paper Source store in Center City on my walk home (dangerous...dangerous, I tell you).

How to save the date? - Part I

Time to get to what was / is probably my favorite part of the wedding planning process - paper products!!

I love paper. I have a ridiculous collection of stationary (including way too many thank you notes) and if you put me anywhere near a Paper Source or Papyrus, I'm guaranteed to walk away a little lighter in the wallet.

Last Christmas I think I sent over 100 holiday cards (imagine the bill at Papyrus)
So clearly the wedding would be no exception. Before choosing anyone to help with the execution, we had to get our design ideas clear.

Bribing the Groom..

to register.

I'm sure this is not a shock to many of you ladies that I had to beg and plead Mr. Turkey to help put together our registry. The conversation* went something like this:
Miss Turkey: "I'm thinking we should probably register."
Mr. Turkey: "OK"
Miss Turkey: "I'm thinking we should probably have between 2 and 3 registries."
Mr. Turkey: "OK"
Miss Turkey: "I'm thinking we could go next weekend."
Mr. Turkey: "WE????"

I'll save you the rest of the conversation, but basically I had to "reward him" for each of the three places we registered.

Befitting of a Bridesmaid

To say I was excited about our NYC shopping trip for dresses (of the wedding and bridesmaid variety) would be an understatement. The purpose of the day was to choose the bridesmaid dresses and narrow down my choices for a wedding dress.

Success would be walking away with a wedding dress choice (that could be purchased closer to home) and ordering the bridesmaid dresses.

We started on a super early trains - converging upon NYC from Albany, Baltimore, Boston, DC and Philadelphia. Our first stop was Kleinfeld for wedding dresses!

Why am I sharing this photo when the post is about bridesmaid dresses?

Mismatched Inspiration

The bridemsaids had spoken. No preference on color, but they wanted to pick their own dress style. Fair enough. I was loving all the weddings with "mismatched" dresses.

Source
All the women look comfortable in their chosen dress - picking designs that best flatter their figures. Isn't that what everyone wants? My bridesmaids ranged in height from 5' to 5'7 and covered almost every shape and size in between. My maid of honor is on the taller end of this spectrum and, as a tall girl myself, I didn't want her to be worried about a wardrobe malfunction due to a super short dress!

Controlling the Vision

So...we have a venue and we have a style...but how to execute?

WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY POST AHEAD

As mentioned, with our venue, the issue was going to be controlling the vision. With the potential for there to be multiple vendors for the reception design and execution alone, we needed to think about how everything would remain cohesive and not turn into a garbled mess.

We spoke to the Kimmel Center and asked them if they could recommend any vendors who could "do it all". In other words, were there companies that could help us with everything from flowers to chairs to forks and china? There were (hooray!) and so we decided to narrow it down to two that had done business with the venue and visit them one spring weekend.

The Wedding Brand

That's not a typo up there. I meant to type wedding bRand.

We'll get back to these later
Source
As a marketer, when I thought about our wedding, I thought about it the same way that I think about my brands (well, aside from the fact that I'm a bit more emotionally attached to the wedding): what does our wedding stand for? how did we want our wedding to perceived? what would be the visual elements of our wedding?

While going through these questions (don't worry, I didn't make him white board it out), Mr. Turkey and I came up with a single phrase to use throughout the planning process: Modern Elegance.

SURPRISE - Part II

When we left off, I was off to bed with a full belly of yummy Mexican and fun drinks. The next morning we took our time getting up and then headed out for a Bloody Mary brunch. I promise you, the entire weekend did NOT revolve around drinks.

As brunch was winding down, the girls handed me a present...a picture frame. I opened it from behind, but when I turned it over...Surprise #3!!
AHHHHHHHH

SURPRISE - Part I

I'm not great with surprises. I usually manage to figure things out beforehand - the engagement being an exception. However, little did I realize that just a few months later, there would be another surprise.

One May day, I received an envelope with a typed address on the front (no return) and this inside:

Yes, these are letters that are cut out from magazines

Pros and Cons

We were very excited about our venue and the fact that we were working with empty space. However, we quickly discovered that with the plusses...also come minuses. For those of you brides considering a similar path, let me break out the yellow legal pad (HIMYM, anyone?) for some pros and cons.

PRO: Make it your own

Everyone wants their wedding to be their own and never hear things like: "oh - so and so did that too" or "that looks just like so and so's centerpieces". Especially if you share a venue.

Our hope was to reduce the chance of hearing those dreaded words about our reception. As you can see from these two photos below, despite sharing a space, these two weddings have very different feels - one simple and elegant, one fresh and rustic.

DIY-ish invite suite

Before I get to my invites (we'll get there eventually - haven't even shared our save-the-dates yet), I thought I'd share my "experience". Warning - it's minimal.

One of my bridesmaid duties in a wedding this past year was shower invitations and, needless to say, I set myself some lofty goals to create a high quality product for the bride-to-be. I didn't totally DIY the invitations, but many of the elements are DIY.

Feedback Requested

So all the bridesmaids had accepted...now what?

I was starting to think about bridesmaid dresses, but with all the inspiration and options out there, it was impossible to narrow down. I decided who better to ask for feedback than my bridesmaids themselves!

The Search for the Dress - Parts I, II and III

I'm saving you all reader space here by consolidating the dress searches that didn't result in purchase into a single post. You're welcome.

I had NO idea what kind of wedding dress I wanted. None. OK - that's a lie. I knew I wanted it to be white. But in terms of silhouette...no clue.

Since my mom was in town a couple weeks after our engagement (and we had the venue and band locked in), we decided to go try on some dresses. I thought it was absolutely crazy to try on dresses that soon, but we made a strict "no purchase" rule.

Our Engagement Party

Planning a wedding isn't easy. Let's face it, a lot of feelings come out and relationships (and wallets) are strained during this otherwise joyous process. Sometimes this comes from tough relationships between daughters and their mothers.

I can say, now 9 months in, that my mom and I are no worse for the wear despite the ups and downs that have come before us. I'm not going deep on you right now, though. Instead, I wanted to talk about how my mom's excitement and involvement in our wedding planning has brought us closer together. You heard how she helped secure our venue, but coming up next is her best effort yet.

Granted, I am biased, but I wanted to share with you the details of our party as they may serve as great inspiration for any events you may be hosting.

World of Color

No, not this.

Source
I wish I was talking about the Disneyland attraction, because colors are hard y'all (so hard that I'm apparently speaking Southern now). When researching colors, it felt like every bride had it wrapped up moments after their engagement. They used fancy words and had colors like "sage" and "aubergine". To me, sage goes in stuffing...and aubergine sounds like an old fashioned name. I hope that, by admitting this, they don't revoke my bride card.

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account

Telling you about Etsy is not at all "breaking news", but I thought I would share my new favorite website / shopping obsession. For those who are not familiar...oh, who am I kidding, you all know what Etsy is.

As someone who would love to be truly crafty, but really only has great organizational skills and perfect penmanship, Etsy is a creative haven. I look at all the beautiful, unique goods and wish that I could duplicate their efforts. In some cases, I've tried and failed (the next time I make an attempt, I'll make sure to blog about it...it's a hot mess), but mainly I just wish that my mother's sewing abilities had been passed on to me or I was a wiz with a hot glue gun. On weekends, I've sometimes found myself perusing the site for hours - not necessarily for anything in particular, but just to see what's out there. This has sometimes resulted in some great purchases, other times in putting me behind in work!

Label your water - Part II

When I left you, I had a blank template on my screen...time for the fun stuff!

The bachelorette incorporated flip flops and the colors pink, green and blue. So, I set out to tie the water bottle labels to both the theme and colors. First, I did some googling (love that it's a verb) for flip flop images to insert, but nothing was matching my vision. I had to get creative.

Label your water - Part I

Here's another chance to impart my wedding guest "wisdom".

As a bridesmaid in a recent wedding, I took on the job of water bottle labels for the bachelorette weekend (gotta hydrate after days at the beach and nights on the town)!!

I know this very much "in vogue" right now, so I figured it couldn't be that hard. I started with some googling.

Can anyone tell me what a water bottle lanyard is?
Though I expect to be wrong more often than right when judging the simplicity of DIY projects, this time I was correct. Now, a lot of the credit is owed to the site I used to purchase labels, which was OnlineLabels.com. This tutorial is going to focus mainly on using their tools and services, but I've also listed specifics that might help if you use a different site for purchasing.

For the love of the mouse

For children who are lucky enough, a visit to Disney World is an amazing experience. You find yourself in "The Happiest Place on Earth," surrounded by more stimulus than you could possibly handle.

If you're a princess lover, you have Cinderella's Castle and all the Disney heroines from your favorite films; a pirate at heart? Swashbuckler Johnny Depp is not too far away; for the thrill seekers, Space Mountain takes you on a ride in the dark...I could go on, but you get my point.

And I haven't even acknowledged all the opportunities that exist to open your wallet once you pass through the turnstiles - silly hats (see below), any stuffed animal you could dream of and treats ranging from huge (no, really huge) turkey legs to popcorn to ice cream in the shape of the park's iconic mouse.

My first trip to Disney. And my first silly hat.
I should know. I've probably eaten 5 times my weight in Mickey on a stick (ice cream), could pay for a full year of college by selling my old stuffed animals on eBay and have hats ranging from Goofy to Daisy Duck. And that's just me...I have a brother too. I have been to Disney more times than years I've been alive. Personally, I believe this puts me in the running for luckiest (twenty-something) kid on the planet. However, the best part of each visit isn't just the chance to act like the sum of my age digits but rather the chance to spend time with my family and soak up the positive energy and "happiness" that exists at Disney World.

Sexy Skivvies - Part II

When we left off, I showed you the tags, but hadn't shared how to pull it all together.

For each bride, I did something a little different for the final product. For one, I made it look like a parfait in a vase, for another, I tied each of the pairs of underwear together and for the last, I used a gift
bag. I can't decide which one was my favorite!

Sexy Skivvies - Part I

As I've mentioned, I'm a wedding pro. This status also comes with wedding shower pro and bachelorette party pro patches for my wedding pro sash.

Brownies, anyone?
Source
With that, I must state, for the record, that I consider my "expertise" to be more as a wedding guest or bridesmaid rather than a bride. So, through this blog, I want to share some experiences / activities from that side of the altar.

We'll start with the fun events - bachelorettes and bridal showers. Since many of my friends all know each other (albeit loosely in some cases) I've needed to get creative with gifts for these events (don't want to be that girl who always gives a toaster). Last summer, I attended 3 bachelorettes within a short period of time and I wondered whether I could stretch a good idea for their gifts*. In the land of Facebook (where everybody is friends), you always worry a photo's going to pop up and ruin the surprise! Luckily, these ladies ran within different circles, so I felt pretty safe.

The lingerie showers were part of their "last weekends" as single ladies (cue Beyonce). I don't have much love for the risque, but I do enjoy personalizing gifts and getting creative (plus shopping for fun underwear). Thus, I embarked on "Operation Personalized Panty Present" production.

Would you be...oh could you be...

...my bridesmaid?

There are a number of wonderful women in my life, both family and friends, who I wanted to be part of our wedding. However, with them spread up and down the East Coast, I didn't want to simply make a phone call or wait until our next visit. Being a bridesmaid isn't all sunshines and rainbows, so I wanted to illustrate how much I appreciated everything they would do as a member of our wedding party...and show them how special they were to me!

I started by practicing my calligraphy on the shiny envelopes.
It looks better when you can see the full name!

Let it Rock

Now that we had the venue set, we needed to make it a party. And when we thought about all our favorite weddings in the past 3 years, the consistent element was music. More specifically, a rocking band that kept people on the dance floor all.night.long.

This would be #2 in Mr. Turkey's limited repertoire of dance moves
Bridesmaid M is trying so desperately to teach him
And we knew JUST the band that would keep our party rocking. How? From another wedding, of course.
The dance floor didn't know what was coming for it

The Venue

Because of our status as wedding pros (award given once you've attended 15 weddings together - we have 32 under our belt), we had seen what we thought was every possible venue. Ballrooms, country clubs, museums, tents - you name it, we ate cake there. Each venue type we visited had it's own unique benefits and every couple had made their reception truly their own through personal touches. However, since we had attended multiple weddings in each of these venue "categories", we wanted to find something that was different. We had a few criteria when making that decision.

The Story of the Ring

After the "how'd he do it?" question often comes a violent grabbing of your hand for a look at the sparkly* ring upon your finger. Oohs and aahs naturally follow.

Besides the obligatory "thank you" after someone looks at my ring, though, I feel the need to tell a more detailed story...one which gives Mr. Turkey extra kudos (more than those necessary for making such a large purchase / commitment). Focus group of one, but I think he did a pretty amazing job and went a bit above and beyond. Like with the proposal story, I think it's his to tell, so I'll turn over the keyboard...

Getting down to details

Since our engagement was after Valentine's Day, we knew we needed to start moving on some of our details in order to have the most options available.

There were a couple snags in our plans to get down to planning, though.

Champagne and Cards - oh my!

After our engagement and weekend away, we were lucky enough to have a chance to celebrate with family. Chase's local aunts, uncles and cousins came together for a small party featuring food, cake and, of course, champagne!

At one point, this was our fridge. We're only 2 people!!
It was very fun, after being by ourselves, to tell our story in person, show off the ring and celebrate. This was just the beginning of an amazing outpouring of generosity, love...and alcohol.

Kiss Me, Kate!

I didn't plan on jumping right into inspiration posts, but early in our engagement there was exciting news from one of my favorite brands that just needed to be shared! A few months ago, Kate Spade New York introduced Wedding Belles (and whistles), a collection including dresses, shoes, jewelry, handbags, and other accessories.

Oh What a Night!

"How'd he do it?"

If I had a nickel for every time someone asks me that question...I'd be able to...maybe cover an appetizer for one of our guests. The point is, you have to have your story down. Every family member, friend, vendor, acquaintance, store clerk and bus driver will ask you to tell about that fated event. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE telling the story, but I've told it a LOT over the past few months. And I think that's a bit unfair.

That's right - I think the men get it easy. Shouldn't they find themselves recounting the events of that evening to the guy on the next weight bench over?

Ok, maybe that's a bit of a stretch scenario, but, in my opinion, the proposal is really Mr. Turkey's story to tell. After all the time and effort put into planning...he should be able to tell his side of the tale. And so, here, in Mr. Turkey's own words, is the story of our engagement.

Who are you? (Who Who Who Who)

"Tell me about yourself." "Share 1 fun fact." "What makes you YOU?"

For some reason, these sorts of inquiries make me nervous. But I figure you all might want a little bit more info about the Turkeys than what you have now...so, to save myself the sweaty palms, I'm going to keep it simple.

Well, a picture's worth a thousand words*, so here are some photos to tell you our story.

This is one of my favorite all-time photos - believe it or not, it was not at all posed

Why am I here?

I hear the questions running through your head...why do you need a second blog? Why start a wedding blog when you already have a perfectly good site over at Rachel-something? You know, the place where there are a modest number of readers, few online comments and houses a glorified (virtual) cookbook. Why not use that site?

I'll tell you why.
