If I had a nickel for every time someone asks me that question...I'd be able to...maybe cover an appetizer for one of our guests. The point is, you have to have your story down. Every family member, friend, vendor, acquaintance, store clerk and bus driver will ask you to tell about that fated event. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE telling the story, but I've told it a LOT over the past few months. And I think that's a bit unfair.
That's right - I think the men get it easy. Shouldn't they find themselves recounting the events of that evening to the guy on the next weight bench over?
Ok, maybe that's a bit of a stretch scenario, but, in my opinion, the proposal is really Mr. Turkey's story to tell. After all the time and effort put into planning...he should be able to tell his side of the tale. And so, here, in Mr. Turkey's own words, is the story of our engagement.
Hi there...Mr. Turkey here. You don't know me, but if you were to list the top 100 traits to describe me, I am pretty sure that 'spontanous' would not even make the Honorable Mention. But that is probably what made our engagement night so special.
So, I had the ring*, and all I needed to do was actually get rid of that thing as soon as possible so that Miss Turkey wouldn't find it first. I wasn't sure exactly when would be the best time to pull the trigger - especially considering Miss Turkey books my social schedule months ahead of time - but once again, everything worked out perfectly.
Just 3 weeks after I got the ring, we had a very unusually warm Friday in February. I had made some tentative plans to propose but didn't fully commit until I saw what a nice night it turned out to be. So, we got dressed up and started walking towards one of our favorite BYOBs in the city. I put the ring in my pocket and decided, for once, that I wouldn't have a plan and would just do it when the time was right.
About halfway there we stopped in a park a few blocks from our apartment called Fitler Square. We were running a little early for our reservation and sat on a bench in the corner of the park. After a few minutes of joking around and telling stories, I realized that we were the only people in the park. This is very rare, as this park always has people, babies, dogs, and squirrels running around at all times. However, at this moment, it was just us, so I decided now was the time.
I don't really recall what I said after that but I do know that somebody walked by about 2 minutes later and this picture was taken...so I must have done something right and we were engaged!

Since I hadn't had enough fun surprising Miss Turkey yet, I told her at dinner that we'd be heading to New York City the next day for some time alone and a Broadway show.
Outside "The Lion King" - we were dying to see this show together! |
I must say, it all worked out perfectly but it is too nerve-racking to be spontaneous, so consider this my first and last time. But it was worth it for a good story.
So, ladies, when someone asks, do you tell your engagement story or let your fiance?
*The ring is a whole other story...we'll get to that later!
