The Wedding Brand

That's not a typo up there. I meant to type wedding bRand.

We'll get back to these later

As a marketer, when I thought about our wedding, I thought about it the same way that I think about my brands (well, aside from the fact that I'm a bit more emotionally attached to the wedding): what does our wedding stand for? how did we want our wedding to perceived? what would be the visual elements of our wedding?

While going through these questions (don't worry, I didn't make him white board it out), Mr. Turkey and I came up with a single phrase to use throughout the planning process: Modern Elegance.

So, it sounds nice and all, but what exactly does modern elegance mean? What does it look like? How will our guests feel it?

We thought about it this way...there are going to be things that are "trendy" right now that will date all the weddings in the 2000s and 2010s. These elements include, but are not limited to, photobooths, mini foods, drink flags, iPhone photos, one-armed bridesmaid dresses and even certain photography styles.

Every "generation" of weddings has gone through their fair share of trends and embracing them makes a wedding up-to-date...or modern. And there are absolutely some of these elements that will be making an appearance on our big day.

However, we didn't want to go overboard or look back later and feel like our wedding had a giant time stamp on it. That's where the elegance came in. We were looking for there to be an overall classic approach to many of our decisions - fairly neutral colors, by-the-book church ceremony, a traditional silhouette for my dress, simple decor, etc.

We saw the modern elements as a "twist" on a classic, elegant wedding, so they'd be somewhat of a secondary player, but visible nonetheless.

An inspiration photo for the caterer - yum!!

Make sense? Perhaps a more consumer brand example would be helpful...

Here's a classic brand:

And here's their modern expression:

Anyone else have a wedding brand? Or do you just think I'm a huge dork for thinking about my wedding like I do my work?
