a phiLOVEdelphia story: Special (and Surprise!) Dances

You’ve already seen Mr. Turkey and my first dance, but there were still 2 additional “formal” dances in our schedule for the evening.

Mr. Turkey and I both thought long and hard about the dances with our respective parents. Well, to be honest, I think Mr. Turkey took a little longer, as the song choice for me and Turkey Dad had been decided early on in the planning process.

For Mr. Turkey, you know that lyrics were important, so when MIL Turkey sent him a list of song options, we had to listen to each and every one several times for him to make a decision. Ultimately, they decided on “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. That’s right, another country song. Mrs. Turkey for the win!!

"I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow...and each road leads you where you want to go..."
"My wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to..."
This was another point in the day when Mr. Turkey and I thought there could be tears. However, it was MIL Turkey who got more choked up during the mother – son dance.

"And while you're out there gettin' where you're gettin' to, I hope you know somebody loves you..."
It was just that concern that led to an interesting choice for the father – daughter dance. Early on, we had decided that Turkey Dad and I would dance to “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra. Not only is it a classic song, but also yet another shout out to our favorite movie, "Father of the Bride".

"Some day, when I'm awfully low, when the world is cold..."
"...I will feel a glow just thinking of you and the way you look tonight..."
This is where things got interesting. About 2 weeks before the wedding, Turkey Dad asked what I thought about doing something “unexpected” in the middle of our father – daughter dance (I teased this a while back). I mentioned before that Turkey Dad is rather reserved, George Banks, really, so I was completely taken aback. He was worried about getting choked up during the dance, so he thought “mixing it up” would help.

So, we asked Jellyroll for their help and they obliged. Halfway through “The Way You Look Tonight”, they broke into “Party Rock Anthem”. Specifically, the part where the hamsters do the running man in the Kia commercial.

The Gabes captured great reaction shots from our guests
Like Mr. Turkey and my first dance, there wasn’t any practicing, so we had some trouble with the coordination, as you can see. After a couple seconds of rocking the running man, we went back into Sinatra to close out the dance.

LOVE this picture
Lack of coordination aside, our surprise was a HIT! The only people who knew about this plan were me, Mr. Turkey, Turkey Mom, Turkey Dad and Jellyroll. Even Turkey Brother was in the dark. People are still talking about how shocked they were that Turkey Dad would do something like that and it set a real “party” tone for the rest of the evening.

The music rolled right back into "Party Rock Anthem"
Anyone else do something “unexpected” during their dances? Whose idea was it?
