A week or so ago, Turkey Mom and I were speaking about engagement announcements.
I'm not sure how common these are everywhere, but they seem to be the norm where I grew up. Almost every week Turkey Mom sees an announcement that involves a classmate of either mine or my brother's (yup, it's the age - this and birth announcements). So, it was an easy choice to go down the announcement path for us; we decided to post in both my hometown's city paper and the small local paper.
The process was pretty easy for the city paper - fill in the required information and they write you a draft: name of bride and groom, parents' names, degrees, etc.

Where that process couldn't have been easier, it was the small hometown paper that required a bit more work since they wanted us to write our own announcement. Thank goodness for Turkey Mom because I just did not have time to figure out the "right" wording and, well, her nickname isn't Miss Manners for nothing.

Turkey's hometown city paper version (written by someone else based on our info submitted):

The local hometown paper (written by Turkey Mom):
Mr. and Mrs. Y Turkey of Hometown are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Turkey, of Philadelphia to Mr. Turkey, also of Philadelphia, the son of FMIL and FSFIL of Anywhere, PA, and FFIL and FSMIL of Anyplace, PA. The future bride is a graduate of Hometown High School, has earned a BA and MBA from University and is currently an Associate Brand Manager for ABC Company. The future groom graduated from College with a BA in history and is currently a Manager for XYZ Company. The wedding is to take place at Saint Patrick’s Church in Philadelphia, followed by a reception at the Rittenhouse Hotel on May XX, 2012. The couple is planning a Hawaiian honeymoon.
As you can see, the two came out pretty much the same (even though Turkey Mom wrote version #2 before we saw version #1). Hopefully these can help others who don't want to go through 127,000 google results!
Now, according to tradition (or so I hear), engagement announcements typically come from the bride's parents. There are other options, though, as couples can announce their own engagement or have the groom's parents do so. We are looking at options locally in Philadelphia and since that's where Mr. Turkey's family is from, we're thinking we'll buck 'tradition' have his parents do the announcing.
Have you done an engagement announcement? Who did the "announcing" for you?
